Regardless of the size of your gathering, pay special attention to how you set your table.  Whether you’re hosting a casual buffet or a fancy sit-down dinner, New Year’s Eve is an evening to pull out all the stops.

I like to mix metallics with both silver and gold on the table, and pull out our nicest china, silver, and crystal.  Even if you don’t have “formal” china and silver, you can still dress up everyday plates with inexpensive gold chargers.  Ornaments are always an easy way to decorate, and fresh greenery is an easy way to add a bit of winter color to the table.

On the table itself, a simple runner or placemats set the stage.  Alternately, a roll of gift wrap also can be cut to provide a table topper that perfectly matches your decor.

Since champagne is the quintessential beverage of New Year’s Eve, I like to make my champagne bucket the centerpiece of the table.   It’s functional AND pretty!

Obviously, the above mentioned champagne will be on the table (or sparkling grape juice if you don’t partake), but I like to add a few mix-ins for those who prefer to jazz up their drink.

A dash of elderflower liqueur in champagne or prosecco is a great cocktail pairing.

The classic Kir Royale (champagne and creme de cassis) is one of my favorites, too.

Pop a cork and raise a toast to the New Year!

If you’re going super-casual, Chinese takeout is one of my go-to New Year’s Eve meals and is always a crowd favorite.

Fondue is another great meal idea; we have some of our favorite fondue recipes in {this} post.  Everyone loves the opportunity to “play” with their food, and it makes the meal into an event of at least three courses.

You also can’t go wrong with beef; our favorite flank steak recipe is {here}.  Another delicious and easy recipe is roasted beef tenderloin with crumbled bleu cheese or Stilton and caramelized onions.  Pair it with a green salad and roasted winter vegetables for a perfect New Year’s Eve menu.
