neutral As summer winds down and the air becomes crisp, I like to refresh my decor with a nod to the approaching season. A neutral color palette serves as the perfect backdrop for seasonal decor and makes it easy to change things up easily and inexpensively.

Most of the walls in my house are a taupey-grey with white trim and set off the rather eclectic collection of furniture and accessories I’ve acquired over the years. I have no problem mixing metal finishes–the gold mirror below works just fine with the silver trophy cups.

neutral Dried hydrangeas are a perfect fall touch, and add texture to the vignette.

neutral A few other natural elements include faux gourds and pumpkins made with cornhusks.

neutral Preserved boxwood wreaths are another way that I like to add color and texture to my decor, like on this plantation-shutter-turned-doggie-gate (see the details here).

Plantation shutter turned into dog gate, neutral On the table, I layer a burlap table runner with round woven placemats. There’s quite a lot of blue and white in my home right now, and I think that it works year-round, so I set the table with my blue willow and striped napkins.

neutral The centerpiece is a mix of magnolia leaves, Granny Smith apples, and white pumpkins. I have several magnolia trees in the front yard, so that’s what’s available to me, but one of my favorite tricks for decorating year round is just to go outside and “shop the yard” for leaves, branches, berries, and pinecones.

neutral I left the windows in this room relatively uncovered to allow lots of natural light to stream in, but the matchstick blinds add color and texture while giving us a bit of privacy at the same time.

neutral On the front porch, my natural wood lanterns stay out year-round, but always get a nod to the season. As fall approaches, mini pumpkins make their appearance.

neutral While the lighted boxwood wreath will be replaced with something more seasonal in the next month or so, I think it transitions well from summer to fall.

neutral With just a few small additions, we’re ready to welcome the new season.  Happy Fall!
