Hi Creative Home friends! We’re back to share inspiration for one of the most used rooms in the house: our craft space. We LOVE to create and play with pretty things in a secluded area that is so completely us that we can be inspired by just looking around… pretty things tend to get you in an upbeat, creative mood after all. 😉

Creating a creative space isn’t that hard, really. After your “musts” are crossed off, (craft table, storage) add some functional accessories, and you’re all set. Here’s a peek at our mood board to help visualize what your creative space can be:

Let’s break it down! Our craft room had to be, above all, functional. We started with a built-in herringbone stenciled bookcase that houses ALL of our crafting supplies; from acrylic paint to washi tape, it is the perfect storage solution with crates, baskets and suitcases filled in an orderly manner.

It’s important to know where your crafting tools are in a pinch, so organization is a must- we love Me Oh My’s storage organization because it’s also attractive to look at. (You can find a tutorial on our site to make your own deer head from cardboard to hang above your own bookcase.) Next, snag a table to craft on; we found Kelli’s mint farmhouse table on Craigslist for super cheap then used chalky paint to make it over.) The EZ Desk is a high tech version of our table and is already compartmentalized. Once the “musts” are taken care of, you can really get creative and brighten up that space with color and lots of it! We have 4 mismatched colored chairs in the Lolly Jane studio that we love, but the coral bankers chair is a good solution for a single sitting area, (like an office desk.)

A way to stay organized with work is important; we use an upcycled bulletin board made from an old crib mattress to clip inspirational quotes, pretty pictures, magazine articles and “to do” lists on, and we love the idea of it being magnetic, like our mood board shows.

Instead of stenciling or painting, you can brighten up the walls with a fun geometrical print, as shown via Layla Grace. We love how it compliments the sunflower rug. It’s fun to mix and match patterns (stripes, solids, florals, prints) to keep the space fresh; doing this also allows for eclectic pieces, such as an owl lamp, oversized clock, mint green pendant light or mustard yellow floor rug to blend together instead of stick out. Staying in the same color family really pulls the space together, but of course pops of colors are welcome! An easy way to bring color in is through printables, such as the art shown on the board, (and below.)

After you’ve made a trip to Ikea to snag that darling rolling cart (which can also be used in the kitchen, bathroom, kids rooms or almost any space in the world!) you will want to think about what floors you want the cart rolling on. (Of course this is technically step one! LOL) We love love love the porcelain floors by Mohawk– they’re kid, pet and spill friendly. Wood floors are so beautiful and warm, but we are suckers for the porcelain as it is easier to maintain at this stage in our lives, (messy selves + messy littles!) Plus, it looks JUST like real wood! Bet you thought #12 in our mood board was real wood! 😉
