Summer has raced by unconscionably fast, and down here in the south we are facing–gasp!–the first day of school.  Having grown up in Maryland, where school starts appropriately after Labor Day, this is always a tough transition for me.  Since August is also ridiculously hot, I try to combat both the heat and the end-of-summer blues by bringing coastal elements into my home decor.  That way, my house looks cool and relaxed, even if I feel the exact opposite!

I’ve subscribed to Coastal Living magazine for years, whether we’re living near the water or not.  I have a stack of them, topped by a coral paperweight, on the living room bench that I use for a coffee table.  Whenever I have a free minute, I kick off my shoes and flip through the pages.  It’s almost as good as being at the beach!

A few aqua blue throw pillows bring the colors of the ocean into our home, and a chicken wire basket filled with dried starfish dresses up the hearth.  And yes, it’s hot outside, but I keep a lightweight throw nearby in case the air conditioning gets too chilly.

Seagrass and jute are great natural fibers that bring a coastal feel indoors.  The basket in the above photo and the round rug under our table (below) add texture and beachy charm to our decor.  The rug is surprisingly comfortable on bare feet, too.

A few framed photos from past vacations at the shore will work with any decor:

Large clam shells have been making the rounds in home decor lately; filled with towels and a natural loofah sponge, this one adds a touch of coastal charm to the bath area.

Shades of aqua blue and cool white dress up the dining area:

And fresh herbs and an aqua enamelware soap holder at the kitchen sink make even washing dishes a relaxing chore.  Well, maybe not relaxing, but at least pretty!
